By now, you’re probably aware that the term “eat clean” has nothing to do with washing your food; rather, it focuses on detoxification and fat loss.
While it may sound straightforward, sticking to a clean eating plan can be quite challenging—especially if you’re busy, don’t enjoy cooking, or struggle with stress eating!
If it were easy, everyone would be lean and confident about their body.
That said, there are four real-life secrets that can truly make long-term clean eating a success. Here they are:
How to Eat Clean Secret #1: Keep It Balanced
The deeper I dive into metabolic health, the more I learn about the importance of balance. Unfortunately, many so-called experts still promote restrictive diets that can be stressful for the body and are definitely not sustainable. Diets limited to singular foods such as soup, grapefruit, raw foods, vegan foods, or carnivore only might encourage fat loss and reduce overall calorie intake, but ultimately, this way of eating may lead to failure.
To make your clean eating plan last and maintain hormonal balance, focus on consuming a wide variety of healthy, whole foods.
How to Eat Clean Secret #2: Release the Diet Mindset
How many times have you said, “I’m on a diet”? Notice how just declaring that puts you in a rebellious mindset? I can’t count how many times I started craving bread right after swearing off carbs!
If “eating clean” feels like a diet, you’ll likely fall into a deprivation mentality. Instead, define what “eating clean” means to you and aim to adopt it as a lifestyle rather than a temporary fix. True fat loss success comes when clean eating feels like second nature rather than a punishment.
How to Eat Clean Secret #3: Set Realistic Expectations
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could undo a decade of indulgences in just a couple of weeks of clean eating? Unfortunately, just as you didn’t gain that weight in one week, you won’t lose it in a week either.
Rather than fixating on what isn’t working or how long the process takes, pay attention to and celebrate each small victory along the way to your long-term goal. Acknowledge each pound lost, inch reduced, or change in pant size. Celebrate your increased energy and strength, improved posture, and better digestion. These achievements build on one another until you reach your ultimate goal. Just remember, significant changes take consistent, long-term effort—so be patient.
How to Eat Clean Secret #4: Have a Plan
This is by far the most important step in your clean eating journey. Without a plan, you risk aimlessly wandering, which can lead to feelings of defeat and you might find yourself polishing off a bowl of ice cream.
To get started, spend some time writing down your do’s and don’ts for your clean eating plan. Feel free to reach out if you need assistance with this step.
Create a list of foods that should make up the majority of your diet, and then make another list of foods to avoid completely.
Use these four steps as a guideline to make clean eating a sustainable lifestyle.
