Have you ever tried to break a habit?
We all know how hard that can be (especially if it’s something that feels like a reward or a stress reliever!)
The good news is that I’ve got a powerful tip to help you succeed…
Let’s say you want to stop nighttime snacking.
The next time you find yourself doing it, PAUSE and ask yourself (minus the judgment):
- What was happening just before you reached for those chips/cookies?
- Where were you?
- What were you thinking about?
- What were you doing?
- What were you feeling?
By doing this, you’ll unearth the ROOT CAUSE of your habit.
Nearly all of our habits serve a purpose…
Whether it’s to ease boredom, loneliness, fatigue, or stress…
Habits are typically formed because they serve a purpose…
The problem is when we keep that habit long after it’s no longer serving that initial purpose.
So when you slow down, get mindful, and find the root cause behind your habit…
You equip yourself with the wisdom you need to develop new, upgraded solutions (such as replacing nighttime snacking with stretching, deep breathing, or curling up with a good book).
So, the next time you find yourself snacking after dinner, ask yourself, “What’s really going on here?”
Depending on your answer, here are a few solutions:
- If you’re lonely or bored: make new connections, enroll in a class, start a hobby. Basically, get out of your comfort zone and mix things up!
- If you’re stressed: acknowledge your feelings and find ways to energize or nourish yourself without the food
- If you’re tired: look into your sleep, exercise, and nutrition habits. Or simply find better ways to rest and recharge.
- If you’re hungry: revamp your nutrition strategy so that you are getting enough food earlier in the day, and having enough protein, fat, and fiber during each meal.
For most people, this probably won’t be a quick fix — but those rarely work anyway.
However, by getting more mindful and finding the root cause of what’s been driving your habit, you’ll be able to find the solution!
Remember… almost every habit you have was created because it served a purpose (at least for a while) — and sometimes it simply takes awareness to shift your actions.
If this is an area you need help with, our Coaching Program will give you a step-by-step approach to help you get over your outdated habits and replace them with solutions that’ll work for you today.
